John, Neil and Chris have worked together in practice for over ten years. Previously as John Lyall Architects – the practice set-up by John in 1991, and since 2011 as Lyall, Bills and Young Architects.
The practice draws upon the varied experience of the three directors, built-upon a proven reputation with mixed-use schemes, and an expertise in housing, retail, cultural and infrastructure projects.
High-profile projects we have completed buildings, are the 2012 Olympic Park, The Goldsmiths Centre for the Goldsmiths’ Livery Company, and most recently the Department for Education’s ‘GenZero’ school project.
Over the last 10 years we have become design experts on school projects. Working as design advisors for the Department of Education, and leading project management companies. LBY are extensively involved with the DfE in developing the next generation of carbon neutral school designs, as well as progressing the spatial accommodation of school design.
Recently we are working with Medway Council on a number of strategic projects to regenerate the town of Chatham.
Other areas of work the practice has experience with are water utility infrastructure buildings as seen on the Olympic Park.
They have also been successful in designing a number of ecclesiastical buildings, both new-build and refurbishment.
The practice is proud of the variety of projects which it attracts and undertakes. It is multi-faceted in its approach, and recognises that each project is ultimately about people. They involve listening to the client’s brief, understanding what is wanted, and recognising the qualities and sometimes restraints of the site. We understand that each project is a journey.
The work of Lyall, Bills and Young as a practice has been widely published both in the architectural press and in the main stream press. They have won a variety of awards for their work. John is also a frequent guest speaker at awards and conferences. On a day to day basis, John, Neil and Chris are involved in the project work: each bringing their own skills to a project. They work closely with a talented group of carefully chosen project architects and assistants, enabling a lively, thoughtful approach to all the practice’s work.
